Tutu’s daughter barred from funeral position over homosexual marriage


LONDON — The daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been barred from officiating at a funeral in a church in England as a result of she is married to a girl, the BBC reported Friday.

Mpho Tutu van Furth, who’s an ordained Episcopal priest within the U.S., had been requested to supervise the funeral of her godfather, Martin Kenyon.

The BBC reported that the Church of England had dominated she couldn’t lead the service in a church. The Diocese of Hereford informed the broadcaster that “recommendation was given consistent with the Home of Bishops present steerage on same-sex marriage.”

The worldwide Anglican Communion is split over same-sex marriage. The Church of England permits its clergy to be in same-sex unions provided that they’re celibate. The U.S. Episcopal Church permits clergy to preside over, and enter into, same-sex marriages.

Tutu van Furth informed the BBC that the Church of England resolution “appeared actually churlish and hurtful.”

The BBC mentioned that due to the church ruling the funeral on Thursday was moved from St. Michael and All Angels Church within the village of Wentnor to an outside marquee close by so Tutu van Furth might preside over it.

Kenyon, who died Sept. 7 on the age of 92, was a long-time buddy of Desmond Tutu. The South African anti-apartheid icon died in December, aged 90.
